About Us
The Penn Wynne Pollinators is a volunteer group run by Penn Wynne neighbors. We help neighbors start small native perennial plant gardens and encourage the removal of invasives.
Planting native plants is one of the best ways to support wildlife and ecosystem health. JOIN THE MOVEMENT!
Why We Care
Our goal is to help our Penn Wynne neighbors establish native plant gardens and make our neighborhood into a pollinator haven and waystation, where every street offers bees, butterflies, moths, bats, beetles and birds native gardens for food, shelter, and habitat.
You may have heard that the monarch butterfly is endangered, but many other bees, bugs, birds, and other creatures are also struggling. One major problem is the lack of habitat and food sources. American suburbs often look lush but are a “green desert” — green lawns and ornamental shrubs, but little to eat, no place to raise young, and dangerous pesticides everywhere.
What are native plants?
Native plants are plants that are indigenous and have evolved or adapted over thousands of years to the climate, soil, and other plants and animals in that area. They are an important part of our local habitats, ecosystems, and ecosystem services (pollination, infiltration, carbon sequestration, etc.).
Why are native gardens important?
Native plants co-evolved with local pollinators and are the best sources of nectar and pollen. Incorporating native wildflowers, shrubs, and trees into your landscape promotes local biological diversity by providing shelter and food for wildlife and is one of the most significant actions you can take to counter climate change and preserve our food web. Most of the land in America is privately owned – so it’s an incredible opportunity to use it to foster long-term ecological health. Also, many native plants are hardy, drought-resistant, and low maintenance. They can save you money on water, fertilizer, pesticides, and lawn maintenance.
Steps to Making a Pollination Station
-
Find a small area on your property (lawn or existing bed).
-
Fill out our contact form to discuss the area (sun-shade, dry-wet) and join our waiting list.
-
Once we have a ‘dig’ date, you will purchase at least 3-5 native plants.
-
We will dig and plant together -- then you will water, weed, and watch!
